1. FAQ: Frequently asked questions.

What does CIF mean?
CIF is the trade term for Cost, Insurance and Freight as designated by the International Chamber of Commerce and the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP 500).
What are Incoterms 2000?
Incoterms are standard trade definitions most commonly used in international sales contracts. Devised and published by the International Chamber of Commerce, they are at the heart of world trade.
Does the sale price include shipping?
No. We ship to ports of call worldwide. International shipments usually require three modes of transport: truck, rail, and ocean. Because CIF is determined by cost, insurance, and freight, we first offer the sale price for the equipment. We then arrange carriage up to the named port once the buyer has made the deposit requirements for their order (freight). Insurance is purchased for the shipment at the time of container loading. We will quote a price for the carriage by email that includes insurance up to the port of discharge. The buyer must arrange (and pay for) carriage beyond the port of discharge. This is often referred to as "on-carriage".
May I nominate my own forwarder or arrange shipping for my order?
No. We work with forwarders that use proven carriers and provide all inclusive service up to the port of discharge. Your order is important to us and we want to make sure that the cargo is positioned into the ocean container as quickly as possible. Under the responsibilities of CIF, we arrange all carriage up to the named port. We take this responsibility very seriously and want to minimize the risk of loss or damage for both parties.
Will you ship cargo without insurance?
No. CIF requires the seller to purchase insurance for the minimum amount of coverage. This insuring term is sometimes referred to as free of particular average (FPA). Many of our customers are approved for credit (financing) terms. Under this arrangement the balance of payment for an order is made to Export Computer Exchange 7-10 before the vessel arrives at the port of discharge. Export Computer Exchange owns the equipment until the balance of payment is made. For this reason we purchase all risk insurance for more complete coverage.
What is the price to ship my order?
We will provide the lowest price available to ship your order from our select forwarding agents. For the majority of destinations these prices will be quoted to you by email within two business days of the purchase order. Ocean equipment and transportation availability within the U.S. will affect when the order is stuffed into the ocean container and the cut-off time to reach the U.S. port of departure.
I'm interested in purchasing equipment and haven't placed an order yet. Can you give me an estimate of the shipping charges?
Yes, but we cannot give a universal price for all shipments. Every shipment is different depending on (but not limited to) variables such as the amount of drayage (trucking), rail, U.S. port of departure, and ocean carrier. If you want an estimate for the shipping to a particular destination please note the reference (lot) number for the equipment and the port of destination and email the request to shipping@compexchange.com.
How long will it take to receive my order?
Transit times vary depending on the port of departure, ocean carrier, season, cutoff date (from the rail or truck to the ocean terminal). The ocean container is loaded after the payment terms have been met. The booking details for the vessel and voyage will be emailed once the container has been loaded.

2. FAQ: U.S. and Canadian destinations.
What is CPT?
CPT is the trade term for CARRIAGE PAID TO the named point of destination. This Incoterm as defined by the ICC's Incoterms 2000 and UCP 500 is frequently used for truck and rail transport because CIF applies only to ocean bound shipments. When an order is placed for delivery within the U.S. or Canada we will arrange carriage and provide a price up to the named city and zip code.
Can I arrange my own trucking after placing an order?
No. We will arrange carriage up to the named point from the purchase order.

Packing and piece count for orders.
The majority of orders are stacked on 48"x40" pallets with cardboard between layers of equipment. The pallet cube is then shrink wrapped, numbered and labeled. Most 20' container orders will be on 10 pallets or less and most 40' container orders will be on 20 pallets or less. The piece count per pallet will typically be:
36 pieces per pallet for 14 and 15 inch monitors.
18 pieces per pallet for 17 inch monitors.
35-45 pieces per pallet for computer systems.
Component orders are boxed and shipped on pallets.

4. Shipping under documentary credits (letters of credit).
We do ship under irrevocable documentary credits. Our specified bank must be listed as the advising bank. If freight and other charges are not included in the documentary credit these charges can be covered under an amendment to the credit or by telex transfer.
In order for us to ship under a documentary credit the following provisions must be met:

  • The form of documentary credit must be irrevocable.
  • Currency and amount specified must be in United States Dollars (USD).
  • Drafts payable "at sight".
  • Transshipment must be allowed.
  • Partial shipments must be allowed.
  • The credit may not contain requirements that exclude vessels under Israeli, Indian, or Taiwanese flag (or any other vessel of a country expressly prohibited by the applicant). This practice is called "blacklisting" and is contrary to U.S. Law.
  • The credit must be prepared subject to the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP 500).
  • Short form or blank-back bills of lading must be accepted.
