USED COMPUTERS (wrong image portrait by the media)

It has become a norm in our current society to go for brand new products be it cars, mobile phones, television sets or computers etc. The fascination with brand new products has increased in the world we live in today. People fail to realize that one can get the same standard, performance with a used product as well as a great deal/bargain, but due to the stuff shown in media (by business tycoons who themselves earn tons of money due to the selling of brand new products) it has become a trend due to which people spend more money on something that doesn’t even provide higher performance than its used version.

Computer is a prime example of this phenomenon. Computer provides the same features, performance, service that a used computer would also provide, however if you were to opt for a brand new computer in place of a used computer the only thing different would be the price tag on it (which would definitely be significantly higher) and that is it. Most people don’t even require the kind of specifications, high speed performance, all they need to do is write documents and surf the net and because of what they see in computer advertisements they go buy a brand new high performing computer at a very high price and all that processing power goes to waste just like all the money spent on the computer.

It is a fact that a used car will underperform as compared to a brand new one but this analogy does not apply to computers at all since computer is not a mechanical device, it’s an electronic device and people having the proper knowledge about computers (computer engineers, computer professionals, computer scientists, computer technicians) always go for a used computer as compared to a brand new computer because they know the secret that a used computer is just as good as a brand new computer and because they know this little secret they go on to save tons of money which they can spend on other accessories for their computers.

If you were to find a place where you could get a used computer with warranty then you are definitely in luck as it couldn’t get any better than that because getting a computer with warranty is a good bargain but getting a computer especially a used computer with a warranty is just great.

Advantages of having used computers is that you not only get it at a lower price, but with a used computer you can upgrade it (RAM, Hard Disk) and those upgrades would also cost significantly less as compared to upgrading brand new computers which itself is a waste of money. You get to save the environment as more than 1.8 ton of materials are used to make a brand new computer (no wonder they charge you so much for that) and when it comes to a used computer nothing is wasted instead it is recycled and you’re doing the environment a favor (no wonder they charge you so little for that).

So one should be aware of the things going around him and my friendly advice being an IT expert would be not to get trapped into what media, manufactures, corporations want you to do as they portray brand new devices to be the best in order to get money from your pocket into their bank accounts, in fact use your mind and know what is best for you (used computers) and your environment and go for used computers as they don’t leave a heavy mark on our planet as well as on our pocket.

USED MONITORS, LCDs (Monitors are immortal)

A monitor/LCD is just as important as a CPU in a computer because there is no point in using a computer if you don’t have a monitor/LCD. The greatest thing about monitors is that they have a very long life. I have a monitor that I still use and I bought it 10+ years ago so the question arises why would you want to spend extra bucks on a new monitor/LCD when you can get a used monitor/LCD at a very low price and that would function for a very long time anyway! Is it because we’ve been conditioned this way? Well let me tell you, even if you buy a new LCD the probability of its pixels dying won’t get any less. Chances are that if the pixels of a monitor/LCD are to die they will die, it doesn’t matter if it’s a new one or a used monitor/LCD. So we can safely reach the conclusion to buy a used monitor/LCD in place of a new monitor/LCD. Monitors have a very long life and monitors don’t get damaged easily so be practical and buy a used monitor you’ll save a lot of money and performance isn’t a factor anyway, life is and it’ll live a lifetime. Considering LCDs, the pixels will die if they have to doesn’t matter if it’s a new LCD so if you want to stay on the safe side buy a used LCD because you’ll know what you are getting yourself into and you’ll see for yourself whether the used LCD has any dead pixels or not rather than waiting for them to die if you don’t buy a used LCD.

Manufacturing a monitor requires a lot of chemicals, no wonder we are running out of resources. Even leading scientists suggest going for used monitors, LCDs as they know that a used monitor/LCD will save the environment and monitors/LCDs are thing that have two states, either it works or it doesn’t.

"Every computer user has a role to play. Users should think carefully about whether they really need to buy a new computer; if upgrading the existing machine could serve the same purpose. Promptly selling old machines to the used-product market is also important"

(Eric Williams, the UNU scientist who leads the Information Society and Environment Issues project)

So be it used or new remember that one thing if it works buy it and if you’re clever enough to figure this out then buy used monitors, LCDs and if you aren’t that clever then let me rephrase it for you

“Buy a used Used USed USEd USED USED USED !!!! monitor/LCD, you’ll save money and your planet OK!”

USED LAPTOPS (Fragile. Handle with Care)

laptopsThe main reason for purchasing a laptop is because of the mobility feature that it offers, but let’s face it what would hurt more?

If this were your brand new laptop or a second hand one?
Obviously your answer would be a brand new laptop.

Because of their mobility feature not only are they prone to get lost easily but can also be damaged especially when one is traveling with a laptop. A brand new laptop is just as fragile as a used laptop.

Being electronic devices both of them offer the same speed, performance and features. The only thing that differentiates the two is PRICE.

“I’ve had a used laptop which is still running and it has been in use since 7 years now.  I earned my masters in Artificial Intelligence with that machine.” – Ali Zohaib

Getting upgrades on a laptop is far more complicated than it is on a desktop machine so buying a used laptop is a better option. At times brand new out of the factory line laptops have been recorded to have technical issues (such as overheating etc) which need to be resolved for which entire production lines were stopped and shipments were called back so buying a used laptop is a safer bet.

Laptops are an expensive piece of equipment because you’ve got the entire display unit, keyboard, mouse, processor, sound system etc all put together in one device that has to have a notebook shape. So whenever a manufacturer creates a new laptop they try to sell it at a very high rate knowing that there are people out there who don’t have the proper knowledge of computer equipment and showing them certain advertisements will make them purchase their laptop.

Laptops can be bought at a very lower price (used laptops) as the only reason to buy laptops is to send emails, work on documents not to run high end softwares and especially high graphic games as because there aren’t many high end laptops available, the ones that are available are at a very high price and because of such high end softwares a lot of laptop processing power and electricity is used which causes their hardware to start malfunctioning.

So if you are buying a laptop your main need is mobility and not high end softwares, and if that is true you should definitely go for a used laptop as it would be cheaper than a brand new one and if the worst were to happen, which will happen as it is inevitable (I myself have a laptop with a non-functioning touch pad) the charges incurred would be less and the loss itself would be lower. Used is the way to go.
